A web site could provide detailed information that your staff would otherwise have to relay via phone or fax. Saving them time, and freeing them to perform more important duties.
If you have a business site, people generally didn't just "surf there"- they came for a reason. 5 to 10 web pages is about the average attention span. Unless you've got other information to give your customers- you won't have a captive audience. Even then most people won't stick around if they can't find what they need easily and quickly.
